Making its way through the news cycle in recent weeks is the bullying incident at Coppell ISD. A now viral video shows an Indian kid getting beat up, and strangled by a peer at his school district. The part that outrages people internationally is that the abuser was only suspended for 1 day, and the victim was suspended for 3 days.
But is there more to this story?
What actually happened:
I am a student at Coppell ISD, and I decided to ask around to see if anyone knew anything about this incident, and soon enough I found something.
She told us that her friend was at table and that Shaan was threatening to rape the abusers family. He incited the incident.ther, and brother. There was likely an exaggeration, and upon further investigation, we were able to talk to someone that knew what was going on.
She told us that her friend was at table and that Shaan was threatening to rape the abusers family. He incited the incident.
Was the punishment justified:
Given all the facts, the school district was well within it's rights to suspend both students for the duration that they were suspended.
There are no sides to pick in this battle, the abuser was not justified in escalating the situation to violence, and the victim needs to be handled properly and taught that rape is not something to make casual jokes/threats about.
The district's response:

In an email to parents, Coppell ISD's Superintendent Dr. Brad Hunt said in part, “Coppell ISD is aware of a video circulating on social media showing an incident at Coppell Middle School North involving a physical altercation between two students. Bullying, both verbal and physical, as well as physical acts of aggression are never acceptable and do not align with who we are at CISD and our core values.”
The email said the incident is being investigated and addressed by the school and the district according to the CISD Student Code of Conduct.
What do students think:
The teen opinion spoke to several students, who agreed to let us share their opinion; their names have been changed for privacy.
The first student, Kay, said that they were extremely disappointed in themselves for signing and sharing the petition online after finding out what really happened on that fateful day and that they have one thing to say to other people that have signed the petition. Another, Tomas, said that he is ashamed of himself for signing the petition.
They have been quoted verbatim bellow.
"I implore you to consider unsigning the petition - Shaan's family have really twisted the facts to get more signatures ... I regret signing and sharing the petition"
"Everyone in coppell feels really stupid for signing the petition, myself included"
